ACL Rehabilitation Phase 4: Return to Training

By Jarred Edwards In Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation for ACL Injury | RSP Sports Physio Albion

After diligently navigating the complexities of ACL recovery, athletes approach a significant milestone = Phase 4: Return to Training. This phase is the culmination of relentless efforts, embodying the transition from recovery back into the realm of athletic performance.

The preceding phases; acute management, building strength, and honing speed and power, have all laid a robust foundation. Now, the focus shifts towards reintegrating athletes back into sport-specific activities, underscoring performance enhancement and injury prevention as priorities. This critical juncture in ACL rehabilitation, facilitated by the expertise at RSP SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPY, aims for a seamless re-entry into the demanding world of sports.

Phase 4 Goals: Bridging the Gap and The Role of Modified Training Sessions

Entering Phase 4 is characterised by specific, ambitious goals:

  • Safely re-engage in sport-specific training.
  • Sustain and build upon the strength, speed, and agility achieved in previous phases.
  • Implement injury prevention methodologies to fortify the knee against future setbacks.

Modified training sessions serve as the cornerstone of this phase, designed to incrementally elevate intensity and workload in alignment with each athlete’s unique recovery arc. Such personalised sessions ensure that progress remains within the bounds of safety, minimising risk while maximally engaging in the restoration of pre-injury capabilities.
